What does “responsive website” mean?
The word "responsive" means that the website is able to automatically adapt to any device on which it is viewed. This web design technique is beneficial to the user, because it reduces the need for resizing and scrolling of content.
A reflection on the statistics…
The increase in the use of smartphones and tablets leads us to reflect on the importance of creating "responsive" websites. The latest Audiweb data show that the number of people who consult the Internet via mobile has exceeded the number of those who consult it from a computer. In detail, 19.8 million people surf the Internet every day in Italy; 12.5 million of these surf from a computer, while 14.5 million via smartphones and tablets. The very high number of users who use mobile phones immediately make us think of how essential it is today to have a website that is perfectly visible and accessible from this type of device.
Not having created a responsive website means that users who browse the Internet from mobile devices (and as you have seen there are many) will leave the site as soon as they see that navigation is not easy or limited in some parts. The website will lose many potential visitors (customers), with the consequent and easily imaginable damage, also in terms of image.
We therefore understand that the first feature and also the main advantage of a responsive website is the ease of navigation from mobile devices. The structure is essential and effective, with clear and intuitive navigation functions. Also, the loading times are fast.
However, there are other advantages to having a responsive website. Let's see together what they are…
Google: Non-responsive websites are penalized by Google, making them drop to the bottom of the page in search results. Google, in fact, in April 2015 introduced a new algorithm that rewards websites suitable for viewing from any mobile device.
Uniqueness: When you need to make site changes, make technical updates or do SEO optimization, the work is done on a single site, and not on as many websites as there are screen sizes. This saves time and effort (and money…)
Fewer Abandons: As mentioned earlier, a site that is easily navigable from any screen size means that the user won't leave the site right away, thus remaining a potential customer.
Positive opinion: a user who sees a responsive website thinks that the company is innovative and in step with the times. The user, therefore, will most likely speak well of your site both on the net through social networks and outside the Internet. Thus, a positive image of the company is created and maintained, which is necessary for the generation of new potential leads.
